I Go Mad 03:23
The wolves are at my door, And I’ve always wanted pets. They say every dog has his day, But I haven’t had mine yet. Cuz I roar like a cat, purr like a lion, Not by mistake, it’s all by design, Through the jungle, stalk my prey, I’d better strike soon, don’t have all day, Heroes come and heroes go, But you can’t be saved from what you know, There’s a time and there’s a place, But we’ve got no time, we’ve got no space. I’d like to claim I understand, But I never was the smartest man, So I share your confusion. Cuz I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh! Yeah, I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh! With one, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war, Plan all night, ‘cuz might makes right, And you’re bringin all your knives to a thumb fight. I’m standing tall when I lie down, And when I speak, I shake the ground, I live by rules, and I don’t break ‘em, And I’ve got no rules cuz I don’t make ‘em, Reasons come and reason goes, And we just want to hear what you know, So tell your story, sing your song, I can’t hold my partner back too long, I’d like to claim I understand, But I never was the smartest man, So I share your confusion. Cuz I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh! Yeah, I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh! Break time, finds us peaceful, Lie and we feel cheerful, Slow down, catch your breath and, We match pace again, So don’t feel bad if you lack worth, ‘Cuz I’m the patron saint of falling short, We need not fear the reaper’s scythe, We know how to live, we know how to fight, We stand our ground while out at sea, The monsoon don’t mean much to me, My words outpace my weary mind, So give me liberty, give me time, I’d like to say I’ a brilliant man, But it seems I never understand, So I share your confusion. Cuz I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh! Yeah, I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh! I go mad, and I get nowhere, Come back home to absent fanfare, Can’t stay here, but I sat down, So I guess I’ll drink another round, I’m not here and I’m not there, My GPS might need repairs, So I share your confusion. Cuz I go mad, But I always come back again. Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh!

There’s no need to worry, Life always works out its own way for you. But when you’re in a hurry, The world never seems to wait for you. Time waits for no man, But I’m waiting for my chance. My aspirations reach beyond Some happy happenstance. ‘Cuz I'm not a tourist, And I'm not a traitor. I'm only sitting And I'm only waiting For the sun. I'm no sheep, Yet I'm no shepherd, I'm somewhere between, And somehow neither, But the sun, Is breaking through the clouds. The space between my pauses, Merely momentary motions. The space between our spacious minds, Mental mountains, obsessive oceans. Time waited for me, But I’m waiting for my chance. My goals in life stretch far beyond Some happy happenstance. ‘Cuz I'm not a tourist, And I'm not a traitor. I'm only sitting And I'm only waiting For the sun. I'm no sheep, And I'm no shepherd, I'm somewhere between, Yet somehow neither, But the sun, Is breaking through the clouds. We build our bridges from both sides, And cross the widest canyons, We’ve suffered through our share of hardship, But always seem to manage. Time stood in silence, While I fumbled for my words. My aspirations reach beyond The spectrum of my worth. ‘Cuz I'm not a tourist, And I'm not a traitor. I'm only sitting And I'm only waiting For the sun. I'm no sheep, And I'm no shepherd, I'm somewhere between, Yet somehow neither, But the sun, Is breaking through the clouds. ‘Cuz I’m not a lover And I’m not a fighter. But with every word, Our future’s brighter, Like the sun. The storm was breaking, But we’re unbroken. The waters were rough, But now we’ve spoken, And the sun, Is breaking through the clouds.

On the first night, I sat down and thought things out. I’m not the kind to think things through But I could change myself for you. On the first night, I looked forward to days to come. I’m not half the man I’d seem Beside the man of all your dreams, Volume up and volume down, Can’t hear a noise in all this sound. Static brings me back. I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. Skipping with the mountains, As they leap. River turning backwards, To the sea. So I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. On the second night, I set out to think things through. I’m not prone to deeper thoughts, But you deserve the things I’m not. On the second night, I looked back on the day behind, Makes me feel like all along, I’m doing right at being wrong. Volume up and volume down, Can’t hear a noise in all this sound. Static brings me back. I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. Skipping with the mountains, As they leap. River turning backwards, To the sea. So I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. On the third night, I learned to let love be. I’m not prone to smiling wide, But something’s different down inside. On the third night, I set out to make a change, If you’re set on being mine, I’ll try to just be worth your time. Volume up and volume down, With every word, I come unwound, Yet you pull me back, I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. Skipping with the mountains, As they leap. River turning backwards, To the sea. So I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep. Skipping with the mountains, As they leap. River turning backwards, To the sea. So I’m counting up the hills (hey!) Like young sheep.

about

The title for "The Hills Like Young Sheep" comes from a quote in Psalms: "The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like young sheep." This line always appeared in my family's Passover Haggadah, and something about the imagery was at one and the same time moving and hilarious.

In the face of amazing technology like smartphones, airliners, and the original Gameboy, time has, in my eyes, failed to dull the impact of that simple metaphor.

Percussive elements in "It'll Last Longer (Interlude)" where created by sampling a Fujifilm X100, an Olympus OMD-EM5, and an old Nikon SLR. This album is not sponsored by any of those companies, but if they'd like to change that, let me know.

If you make a habit of reading my album descriptions, you're likely tired of seeing this, but a major component of my every musical production is the support I receive from my friends and family. They're a profound part of my life, and my life is a profound part of my music, so according to the transitive property of profundity, my friends and family are a profound part of the music itself. Thanks, everyone.
